J.D. BARROW ART GALLERY

MAIN LIBRARY

You are invited to relax and read near one of the two fireplaces. This building has been a library for 110 years. We have high ceilings, wonderful oak woodwork and fascinating art on display.

The periodical reading area has four large leather chairs around one fireplace. This section of the library contains five daily newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, the weekly Skaneateles Press, and over 90 magazine titles. For financial reference the Value Line Survey and Extended Value Line Survey are also in this area.

The Skaneateles Library Association is a private corporation that operates as a public library. Services are free to residents of the community. While we function as a public library, the Skaneateles Library receives no tax dollars from any government agency. The generosity of the community provides funding through endowments, a fund drive and an annual book sale.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE...

"I cannot live without books." Thomas Jefferson 1815

The library collection includes over 32,000 items including large print, audio books, other audio-visual items, five years of indexed magazine titles and at least one year of daily newspapers. These materials all circulate from the library. Skaneateles newspapers are on microfilm beginning in 1829. Internet access with a high speed cable connection and inter-library loan are also available. Information about library materials can be retrieved from three On-line Public Access Computers (OPAC).

LIBRARY HALL

Programs are held upstairs in Library Hall, a popular arena for all kinds of events for over 100 years.  In 1990 Library Hall was beautifully and authentically decorated, blending the splendor of the past with best of contemporary materials to ensure utility, safety, comfort and durability.  This room has a small stage and seating capacity for 100.

THE CHILDREN'S ROOM...

In 1987 a separate Children’s Room was created in the former “Sphinx” building. This room was re-decorated in 1996 with new shelving, an easy chair, a window seat and a computer counter. Whimsical murals were painted by a local illustrator of children’s books. This area is a very special place to introduce children to the world of books.
Programs are held upstairs in Library Hall. This large, beautiful room has a small stage and seating capacity for 100.

JOHN D. BARROW ART GALLERY

The John D. Barrow Art Gallery is a single artist gallery containing the works of John D. Barrow (1824 - 1906) a second generation Hudson River School style painter. The gallery opened on October 8, 1900 beginning a wonderful cultural and historical legacy for the Skaneateles community. The primary entrance to the art gallery is through the library; however, the gallery is a separate non-profit facility with its own staff of docents.

The gallery is open Saturday 1 to 4 p.m. (May - December) and Monday - Saturday 1 to 4 p.m. (June-August), with additional hours during Dickens festivities.

ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE - Second weekend in July

We gratefully accept book sale donations from the beginning of August to the end of June. Due to limited storage space we do not accept old textbooks, old encyclopedias, magazines or condensed books.

The book sale is held under tents on the library grounds. We generally have 20,000 books for sale.
